Dave
I think you're right there. Was it "Shop Around"?, when BG & Smokey nearly had a car crash travelling around to push the 45.....People often forget how hard these guys worked early doors.Gordy was doing everything at the start.
The story I like was when BG visited a radio staion and was virtually ignored by the DJ, who wanted a flunky to go and get hot dog/ sandwich and Gordy volunteered. The DJ then 'noticed' him, and as a result played the 45 BG had in his hands....and it took off, and Motown was on the way.

Of course they had that master PR guru Mr Al Abrahams there to guide them in the early days . I reckon the most productive decisions Berry ever made had nothing to do with music at all. It was the way he set out to emply people who he be lieved could pay back his investment in them a hundred fold. Best example....Mr Smokey Robinson. Al Abrahams is currently finishing a book that I think will be published by Dave Rand le at Bankhouse books so once I get more details I'll pass them on. Should be a great read.

Agreed Dave,
Whilst BG was a good songwriter (to an extent) his main skills were getting talented people around him and onside, creating that postive vibe that drove Motown forward.
The competition, the strive for excellence....
The vision.
Al Abrahams was very important by all accounts, getting the new company into the big league with other more established labels etc.
looking forward to his book............from bankhouse books.
