Hi i am looking for the name of a song and the artist. I dont have much to go on but it is very much Tamla Motown and sounds very much like Tears of a Clown. I heard it in the background on a tv programme called the Wonder Years so i dont have much to give you but here are some of the lyrics (not in any order) that i believe to be almost correct.

The chorus contains the following
When things were fine and your love was mine, I could reach up to you and you'll be there
Seems so strange that you rearrange and i feel like such a fool
I'm your fool.

I saved the section of the tv programme to dvd and ripped the audio off to mp3 but because it is a tv programme there is a lot of talking going on over the track.
But it does get clearer as the song progresses. It does sound like Motown or Northern Soul. I have attached the file for anyone who would like to listen to it.
Thanks in anticipation of your cooperation

Regards

Kevin

Hi Kevin!

I listened to the snippet you provided, but unfortunately was not able to ascertain anything from it. You're right, it DOES sound Motownish or Northern, but I have never heard the particular song before, so I can't be of much help.

I will tell you this, though: The Wonder Years never really used any song from that period that was unrecognizable. The show was popular and used a lot of familiar music from the time the series was set in (most notably, the series' theme, which as you may know was the Joe Cocker version of "With a Little Help From My Friends"), so I doubt that this was some really obscure song. Also, they did do a couple of soundtrack CD's...I don't know if the song in question would be there, but you never know. Hope I've given you something to go on...

Best,

Mark

HI Mark and thanks for your reply. I have tracked through all the Wonder Years cd's but without any luck. Its certainly does sound like a late 60's/early 70's and that episode was set in 1971. As the original track for that particular scene in the programme was 'Tears of a Clown' I find it strange that they changed it for a rerun of the show that is well over 10 years old and i would be suprised if they invested in writing and recording a track for a programme that was past its heyday.

Despite 'Googling' the lyrics for days on end, with no luck what so ever. Anyway thanks for your help and who knows, maybe an Motown expert may see this as a challenge to solve

Cheers

Kevin

Hello there,

I can`t tell you what it is but I can tell you what it isn`t. It is definately not a Motown track. It sounds to me like one of those tracks recorded in the 90`s that was trying to capture that 60`s sound. Your original theory of a specially recorded track may be correct. The cost of licensing a track like "Tears of a clown" may have been far more costly than knocking out a soundalike, ask  Ian Levine about that !!!

Best of luck with your search

Chris

Thanks Chris, I did some more research last night and having ploughed through the Wonder Years chat forums I found that the six series of 'The Wonder Years has not been released by 20th Century Fox yet. This is because of royalty issues. All the songs on in each episode are well known tracks for the late sixties/early seventies which fit in with the period
that the show is based on. If 20th Century Fox paid royalties to each artist
for release of their music on the show on dvd it would cost 20th Century Fox
millions. Therefore they have started a "music clearance" procedure to replace some of the music with 'Generic' tracks by new bands or they may have commissioned song writers to produce music for the show. This is a lot cheaper as there will be no royalty
payments. Some of the original music will remain but some will be replaced by
similar sounding generic music.
I cannot be certain but I think this is what has happened to 'Tears of a Clown'.
It has been replaced by a new 'generic' song that sounds familiar.

I may have to email 20th Century Fox and ask them for details of the track and
whether it is available for purchase but i am not too optimistic about their
co-operation.

This is really bugging me as I am very resourceful anmd have never had trouble
locating music before

You may also want to try Internet Movie Database: IMDB. www.imdb.com I think that when you look deeply enough through movie credits you can finally see what music was used, after going past the cast and technical crew. Maybe you can find it this way by looking up The Wonder Years, finding the exact episode and searching through the details for that particular episode. It just might be there. I'm not certain, but it's worth a shot.

hi Jas, thanks for the advice...i have tried all your suggestions but still no luck. I may write to 20th Century Fox as they current own the rights to the programme but i am not hopeful that they will help
