A Special Message from The Dells

In Remembrance of Johnny Carter

(June 2, 1934 - August 21, 2009)

For all those who have supported The Dells over the generations – our fans, the media, radio stations, family, and friends in the music industry – we send sincere thanks for your prayers, wishes and condolences. As we mourn the loss of one of the music industry’s great legends, let us also pause for a moment to celebrate the life of our brother and best friend, Johnny Carter. During his lifetime, Johnny earned unparalleled distinction as the lead tenor of The Dells. His contributions to music secured him two inductions in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, an induction in the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame, numerous other awards, and countless commendations. His thunderous tenor and multi-octave range earned him many names. In Jamaica, he is known as the “bird man,” because he could hit notes as high as the tallest tree. To The Dells and members of the band, he was “Old San Juan” and “Little Big Man,” who often sang soulful melodies about opossums in the gum tree and raccoons on the ground.

To the music industry, he was the happiest cat around – infectiously good humored. His radiant smile and impish wink will remain etched indelibly in our minds and hearts. Mostly, Johnny Carter lived fully and applied his God-given talent aptly up to the last day of his life. But his most extraordinary characteristic is the role he assumed as a “Man” – father, brother and best friend. Although he no longer can stand with us, the memory and essence of Johnny Carter will remain eternally in the hearts of all of The Dells, his family and fans worldwide. His contributions as one of the greatest tenors in the history of music are permanently archived and will impact the world of music forever.

While most remember him for his incredible voice, to us, Johnny can never be properly memorialized. Our wish is that Johnny Carter’s life and legacy continue to inspire each of us as we move forward knowing that THE DELLS ALWAYS . . . YES . . . ALWAYS WILL BE TOGETHER.

Wanted to introduce myself to you all. I've been lurking for a few weeks all whilst trying to land a job and get relocated and am finally settled enough to be able to do devote a bit of time to this.

Brief Bio:

1955 - Born in Cardiff, Wales, hence funny spelling of first name.

1956 - Grow up in Ilkley, Yorks, near moors, baht hat.

1965 - Move to Preston, Lancs. Grow more.

1968 - Hear Roadrunner, Baby Do The Philly Dog, Soul Sister Brown Sugar etc. at Butlin's disco. Life changing moment! Buy first piece of vinyl, hear loads more sounds at local youth club, Preston Top Rank etc., buy loads more vinyl. Pattern is firmly established.

1971 - Get on free coach to Blackpool Mecca, refused entry for not having a tie! Buy tie, become regular patron, hear way more records, buy way more records...

1972 - First allniter - Leeds - Queen's Hall? Should have been held in York coz it was a shambles! Hear Russ Winstanley spinning sounds at Wigan Rugby Club.

1973 - Off to college darn sarf.

1974 - Get to the Casino for one of a handful of times.

1975 - Blow minds of Brighton Poly's Soul Society patrons by playing Afternoon of the Rhino. Blow yer fuckin' whistle to THAT!

1982 - Emigrate to Toronto, Canada.

1984 - Sire beautiful talented daughter Natalie.

1986 - Discover Kent albums in Sam the Record Man, discover Kopps on Queen Street. Sporadic record-buying.

1988 - Sire beautiful talented daughter Madeleine.

1997 - Learn via the internet (Night Owl, KTF etc.) that Northern Soul is alive and kicking!

1998 - Meet up with other like-minded idiots and together form the TOSSAs (Toronto Old Soul Sound Associates) aka Soulclan and start putting on Northern Soul nights in Toronto.

1999 - Separation and divorce! Attend inaugural Soul In The Sun (USA) in Sarasota, Florida with Jan et al. Discover eBay, oh shit!

2000 - Hold first North American Northern Soul weekender in Toronto. Soulclan implodes. Meet love of life Ruth!

2005 - Jobhunting in central Florida, learn of Hitsville's allniter, renew friendship with Jan, meet Dave and Bev, Jason & Sarah, Frog and Frogetta, like meeting old friends!

2006 - Start new job, relocate to central Florida, eagerly anticipate Churchills gig January 29th in Miami.

I'm hoping I'll be able to contribute to the list in my own small way and look forward to hearing more of the worldlwide banter that seems to be the essence of Hitsville.

Little Willie John was once dubbed the “Prince of the Blues”. He exerted a great influence on the music scene. Not only did he influence the R&B genre, entertainers across the musical spectrum were influenced by his vocal style. He was probably one of the most emulated and imitated vocalist of our time.

On January 17, 1996 LWJ was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The presenter was the legendary, “Stevie Wonder”. While presenting, Stevie spoke about John’s vocal talent and how he listened to John's records “day after day” and was influence by this great artist.
