The soul is the emotion. The soul and the emotion are completely nonmaterial existence. The consciousness and the emotion are inseparable, which means each consciousness accompanies the corresponding emotion.

We must understand that the whole brain is a energy system besides as a nervous system, which has the basic property of each energy system—the process of energy release and absorb. The emotion, namely the soul, can control the whole brain as a energy system to release the energy, acting on the nerve cells of the cerebral cortex.

Take the movement for example, the highest mandator(prime mover) of movement is not the cerebral motor cortex but the movement “consciousness” and the movement “emotion”.The movement “emotion” activate the discharge of the motor neurons by control the whole brain to release energy to act on the cerebral motor cortex, which creates the movement by passing to the muscle by nerves. The cerebral motor cortex is the executive officer of movement, the executor of the movement “consciousness”, the executor of the movement “emotion” and the movement “soul”.

The brain has two parallel systems. One is nonmaterial-the soul, and the other is material-the nervous system.

The whole brain as an energy system releasing energy is the bridge and the connection of the completely nonmaterial system-the soul and the material system-the cerebral cortex and the nerve cells.

It is the most miraculous and the greatest secret of the nature and God that the soul, the completely nonmaterial-system, controls the whole brain as an energy system to release energy to act on the material system- the cerebral cortex and the nerve cells.

What's the best (or biggest) record find you've had in recent years that was $20.00 or under?

Record, Price, Location (State or City is fine), and when you found it.

I've had a few nice finds since being in the States, but i think this was the best one so far:

Timmie Williams on Mala, $15.00, Los Angeles, Last year.

Here's the rules. No "I found a Del Larks at Wigan in 1976 for 150 quid", etc. Recent years finds only. Let's say over the past 5 years (give or take).

I attended the HAL Awards event this year produced by Motown songwriter/legend Janie Bradford who wrote several songs at Motown, TIME CHANGES THINGS by the Supremes, YOUR OLD STAND BY/I'LL STILL BE AROUND for Mary Wells, TIE A STRING AROUND YOUR FINGER sung so great by Gladys Horton with the Marvelettes !! -- and all the ones you know along with her famous hit MONEY THAT'S WHAT I WANT for Barrett STrong !!

This years HAL Awards show celebrated 50 years of Motown. Held Sept 28, at the Beverly hills Hotel, these are the Motown stars that I saw there ... CHRIS CLARK, sitting at BERRY GORDY'S table, SCHERRIE PAYNE of THE SUPREMES, BRIAN HOLLAND, MICKEY STEVENSON, MABLE JOHN, BETTY KELLY of MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS, BRENDA HOLLOWAY along with EDDIE LEVERET OF THE O JAYS, GEORGE CLINTON who were honored by the HAL Awards.

Chris Clark and Brenda Holloway performed. When Miss Holloway hit the stage; she called up for Berry Gordy, and Mr. Gordy did walk himself up the stage to kiss and hug Brenda as he called her "The Greatest Voice in the World."

Inbetween the show, the all-star audience stood up and sang MONEY THATS WHAT I WANT when Miss Janie Bradford, took the stage. It was a super event !!

Oh yeah, don't forget GLORIA JONES was there looking as sexy as ever along with CLAUDETTE ROBINSON "Wine, Women & Song."

After night at casino MR M"S was the place to wait for the bus home ,my mum and dad would have gone bananas if they knew i was in Wigan at 8am in the morn as i was only 15 at the time and me and Dave were supposed to be at each others houses as we told our parents , Great time tho miss the scene and dont get chance to get to any of the new venues ,still you cant take those memories away , That dance floor was packed with blokes as well as women we didnt mind what other people thought about us dancing it was a chance to do your thing and you went for it , cant do backdrops now tho might get stuck although may start training to get suppleness back ( wishfull thinking) Spins arnt as good now but can still pull them off , love to dance and will do whenever get the chance , Listen to me 49 year old and thinking like this have made resolution whilst im out of work to go swimming and get those muscles back you wont keep this soul man off the dance floor for long. I have been asaked by my local rag, to write a feature about the coming motown Anniversary on the 12th January.

now, being a motown D.J for the past 20 odd years, it may seem weird, that i really dont know where to start, and in such a short notice as well, it has to be ready for publication next friday !!!

so, what do you think!! -- what would the "normal reader" prefer, a full background story of how/where it all began, or just some clippets of different artists and their music.

i have always found that when doing this specialist night, some people only react to a couple of tracks that they can remember, and there arent that many that ask for really obscure records, and being a local paper with about 60,000 it may be skipped if they dont see what they want..

Northern Soul’s Greatest Floorfillers

This revamped edition of Ian Levine’s SWONS package dropped on the doormat today and after waiting almost 3 months for an opportunity to view the finished project in it’s entirety, I quickly checked the packaging whilst sliding Disc One of Five into the DVD player and awaited the boiling kettle so I could settle down and enjoy what has been described (by Ian himself it has to be said), as, “A set to last a lifetime, the MUST HAVE gift of the Century!”. Well I can think of a few things that the previous 100 years have produced that would probably take precedence over a set of DVDs but that’s Ian’s style and we should expect no less at this stage of the game.

On with the performances…

The set consists of five DVDs and although there is little new content from what I could see in relation to the artists on the previous original set there is one omission that makes the whole thing worth reissuing again. The glitchy effects that, for many at least, spoiled the original are not there this time round. Therefore the artists are now front and centre and not part of the background as happened to some in the original. The improvement in the presentation of the performances is such that in some cases it looks like a new video recording and all involved should receive a pat on the back for recognizing that the weakness of the first issue was definitely the effects and this has now been put right.

There’s plenty to criticize in respect of the music not being original and having been re-recorded, (it was, financially at least, completely unachievable to re-record the tracks with full orchestration), but to do that would seem churlish and not understand the whole point of the exercise which was to record for posterity the performances of some of the greatest songs sung by some of the greatest soul singers from the Golden age of Northern Soul.

So..does the set do that? In my opinion it’s a resounding yes. I thought the original did too but with the distraction of the effects now gone and the improved soundtracks that have been reconstructed using better technology available since the original, for people who love seeing the artists they revere performing and aren’t blinded by the UK soul scene’s vinyl record snobbery it’s certainly worth upgrading to this set.

Many of the artists on the set are now no longer with us and even with many artists having made the visit to UK shores without this set we would have no visual record of legends the likes of Bob Relf, Lou Johnson, The Vocanos, Lee Andrews, Jimmy Conwell, Johnny Moore and a host of others. One of the most poignant artists on the set is Bobby Paris who performs all three of his Allnighter classics.

Highlights for me were:

Watching Earl Van Dyke smiling up from the Hammond B3. The one artist I really regret having never met.

Watching Edwin Starr singing “I Have Faith In You”. The backing track simply fades into obscurity as his voice takes centre stage as it always did.

Herbie Hunter performing “I Was Born To Love You”. Man…his tache is bigger than mine!!

Seeing heroes like Alexander Patton, Bobby Hutton, Dean Courtney etc dressed to the nines in 'best bib and tucker' giving the audience the 'old school', full monty of a performance just like back in the day.

Watching James Fountain and Billy Harner. Two records from slightly different eras that both shaped my love of the music all this years ago.

Downside? Well it’s Ian so there’s gonna be a twist as usual but I would have preferred less of his recent productions and more of the vintage stuff. It was after all described as the 200 GREATEST floor-fillers but I can’t remember Tahira Jumah, Noel McKoy, or many of the Vanecia Wilson tracks filling any floors and with the omission of the likes of Mel Britt from the set it wouldn’t seem a fair swap, no matter how tight the space available.

In summary…any self respecting lover of soul artists would appreciate the set I feel. The performances are presented so much better than previously that an upgrade would be worth it in my eyes. As the years pass there’s no doubt that the whole SWONS project will gain in status and it’s true value as a history of the artists and the music they made will be recognized. A MUST HAVE gift of the century? Well to be fair, maybe not but a set to last a lifetime? I reckon. I’ll be pulling it off the shelf every now and then, enjoying the company of my heroes/heroines for sure and for a price tag of 30UKP that‘s a fair price to pay for that pleasure in my eyes. Many will continue to complain about the drum and bass tracks employed and that they’d rather remember their heroes as a sound coming through a speaker in some dark dancehall of 30 years ago. Well, that is of course their prerogative but for someone like me who loves seeing the people perform these classics no matter what the surroundings, I’ll take the only thing that’s financially viable and if that’s the artists’ singing in their kitchens as one or two do than I’m more than happy with that.

Started a training programme two weeks ago. Have used the ipod with different labels music on each session. Did Loma, Okeh, Carnival, Motown, etc. The session has been the same 6.2 miles route everytime. The one that got me to the end of the session first was .......MIRWOOD! So....it's true...said in 1970s, Carlsberg ad voice-over styleeee ..."Mirwood reaches parts of the body other labels cannot reach!" God bless Fred Smith!

I just had two great phone calls last week. The first one was with Tom Fauntleroy of the Unifics and the other was with one of my favorite artists of all time-Mr. Al Johnson. Talking to these guys was a real thrill for me and lately, I've been rediscovering just how great the Unifics were and still are to this very day.

Needless to say that all of this will find its way to the pages of TTB! so if anyone's got questions for the group and/or Al Johnson, just holler up and I'll get the answers.

I've got all the Unifics singles but no white demos, foreign pressings or picture sleeves. If anyone's got anything, let me know. Same with Al Johnson and his projects. Looking for a really nice scan of "Show Me the Way" by Seville, too.

I really like the Mary Fox Northern Soul And Motown Show on the BBC. She put together a really good set every Friday. Any way the show comes from Stoke on Trent. There is a Club there that look a lot like Wigan back in the day so they say. Thats were there filming this new film. Hi folks,

Sorry for the prolonged absence on the forum, but regular life just overtook me for while there! For those interested, Bev and I are now firmly esconced atop a mountain in Espana. Drains, Retaining Walls, Electricity, Running Water, and tarmac road to the nearest town are now in situ and all up and running. All this AND a view of the Mediterranean on a nice clear day!

So...records are now filed, decks are in place (althoiugh not wired up yet), and scanner is in place. Let the fun begin.

Updates on Some Soul Icons!

Just thought I would let everyone know how a few of our boys have been doing...

Recently Dave and I heard via George McGregor that Mike Terry was in a state of ill health. We got a bit concerned so I phoned Mike and didn't hear back for a number of days. Finally last night, the man himself called and he sounded just as energetic as ever. He did go through a bad spell but is feeling much better now and ready to get back at it. He's been working on a project with Bridges, Knight and Willie Jones for a while and he's gathered strength and is back at it. Mike is a fighter and despite minor setbacks. he's keeping on.

Then, this afternoon, Weldon A McDougal III rang me and let me know just how busy he's been with a project that he'll be unleashing very soon hopefully. Let's just say he's been dusting off a few old tapes...

And if that wasn't enough, George Kerr called up and introduced himself. He got his copies of TTB!#7 and was absolutely overjoyed with our work! He had loads of enthusiasm about the feature and let me know that he's back in the studio with a Northern Soul legend working on a new album.

Sounds like these guys have all been keeping busy and keeping it soulful!

I have a question about this song maybe someone can help me. It´s about the vocal arrangment. I would like to know if Holly´s voice is doubled on this record. My ears are not good enough to hear it.

In my opinion Holly sings the front vocals but she is in the backround with her girls too. Maybe someone can bring light in the darkness. It would be great. Thank you so much.

Chubby & The Turnpikes

Has anyone ever noticed a variation in titles on the Chubby & The Turnpikes on Capitol?

Every copy i've had has been "i DIDN'T know the inside story", and i've often thought, why the hell does it have "Didn't" in the title as they don't sing 'Didn't' in the chorus of the song.

Well, the reason for bringing this up is i've just brought a Demo of this, and have just noticed it has the Correct title "i KNOW the inside story".

I've attached pictures of both variations, both scans are from Ebay. It's certainly not a Demo / Issue thing, as i've had Issues & Demos of this in the past and ALL had the 'DIDN'T' title.

Anyone shine some light on this for me?

Just popped in to offer apologies for my absence over the last week or so. Relocation is now fully underway. Am in hotel tidying up the odds and ends of our lives before flying over to Europe on Thursday. Still managed to do a set of interviews with Bobby Fulton of Soulville/Jaywalking Records and Carl Fisher of The Vibrations though via the cellphone. They're gonna make fantastic stories for the magazine.

Bev is working her tail off as usual. Magazine gets delivered tomorrow, all subscribers will have their copies mailed on Tuesday am.

Wednesday - final tidy up of the old place before flying out on Thursday.

I'll be posting lots of new stuff and catching up with the Discographies and Video clips once we catch our breath.
