Started a training programme two weeks ago. Have used the ipod with different labels music on each session. Did Loma, Okeh, Carnival, Motown, etc. The session has been the same 6.2 miles route everytime. The one that got me to the end of the session first was .......MIRWOOD! So....it's true...said in 1970s, Carlsberg ad voice-over styleeee ..."Mirwood reaches parts of the body other labels cannot reach!" God bless Fred Smith!

Hello Hitsvillers,

I just had two great phone calls last week. The first one was with Tom Fauntleroy of the Unifics and the other was with one of my favorite artists of all time-Mr. Al Johnson. Talking to these guys was a real thrill for me and lately, I've been rediscovering just how great the Unifics were and still are to this very day.

Needless to say that all of this will find its way to the pages of TTB! so if anyone's got questions for the group and/or Al Johnson, just holler up and I'll get the answers.

I've got all the Unifics singles but no white demos, foreign pressings or picture sleeves. If anyone's got anything, let me know. Same with Al Johnson and his projects. Looking for a really nice scan of "Show Me the Way" by Seville, too.

I highly suggest that you rediscover this highly underrated group.

I really like the Mary Fox Northern Soul And Motown Show on the BBC. She put together a really good set every Friday. Any way the show comes from Stoke on Trent. There is a Club there that look a lot like Wigan back in the day so they say. Thats were there filming this new film. Hi folks,

Sorry for the prolonged absence on the forum, but regular life just overtook me for while there! For those interested, Bev and I are now firmly esconced atop a mountain in Espana. Drains, Retaining Walls, Electricity, Running Water, and tarmac road to the nearest town are now in situ and all up and running. All this AND a view of the Mediterranean on a nice clear day!

So...records are now filed, decks are in place (althoiugh not wired up yet), and scanner is in place. Let the fun begin.

Just thought I would let everyone know how a few of our boys have been doing...

Recently Dave and I heard via George McGregor that Mike Terry was in a state of ill health. We got a bit concerned so I phoned Mike and didn't hear back for a number of days. Finally last night, the man himself called and he sounded just as energetic as ever. He did go through a bad spell but is feeling much better now and ready to get back at it. He's been working on a project with Bridges, Knight and Willie Jones for a while and he's gathered strength and is back at it. Mike is a fighter and despite minor setbacks. he's keeping on.

Then, this afternoon, Weldon A McDougal III rang me and let me know just how busy he's been with a project that he'll be unleashing very soon hopefully. Let's just say he's been dusting off a few old tapes...

And if that wasn't enough, George Kerr called up and introduced himself. He got his copies of TTB!#7 and was absolutely overjoyed with our work! He had loads of enthusiasm about the feature and let me know that he's back in the studio with a Northern Soul legend working on a new album.

Sounds like these guys have all been keeping busy and keeping it soulful!

I have a question about this song maybe someone can help me. It´s about the vocal arrangment. I would like to know if Holly´s voice is doubled on this record. My ears are not good enough to hear it.

In my opinion Holly sings the front vocals but she is in the backround with her girls too. Maybe someone can bring light in the darkness. It would be great. Thank you so much.

Chubby & The Turnpikes

Has anyone ever noticed a variation in titles on the Chubby & The Turnpikes on Capitol?

Every copy i've had has been "i DIDN'T know the inside story", and i've often thought, why the hell does it have "Didn't" in the title as they don't sing 'Didn't' in the chorus of the song.

Well, the reason for bringing this up is i've just brought a Demo of this, and have just noticed it has the Correct title "i KNOW the inside story".

I've attached pictures of both variations, both scans are from Ebay. It's certainly not a Demo / Issue thing, as i've had Issues & Demos of this in the past and ALL had the 'DIDN'T' title.

Anyone shine some light on this for me?

Just popped in to offer apologies for my absence over the last week or so. Relocation is now fully underway. Am in hotel tidying up the odds and ends of our lives before flying over to Europe on Thursday. Still managed to do a set of interviews with Bobby Fulton of Soulville/Jaywalking Records and Carl Fisher of The Vibrations though via the cellphone. They're gonna make fantastic stories for the magazine.

Bev is working her tail off as usual. Magazine gets delivered tomorrow, all subscribers will have their copies mailed on Tuesday am.

Wednesday - final tidy up of the old place before flying out on Thursday.

I'll be posting lots of new stuff and catching up with the Discographies and Video clips once we catch our breath.

Sorry I havnt been around for awhile, but an operation, appendix burst, laid me up for awhile, fully recovered now pretty much & raring to go...........getting out n about, saw Mr Moore at Burnley & caught up with friends on the London & South Coast scenes. Buying choons, playing choons, dancin' to choons................looking for a new venue to promote on the South Coast, in the true 'Vickers' tradition, will be a melting pot of Rare Soul from across the decades, just need a venue now .

Soul Music Museum

Hi all,

There are moves afoot to try and create a Soul Music Museum in the heart of the area that used to house lots of the classic Recording Studios in Detroit. There's nothing concrere or in writing yet, but it's looking like if people grab the opportunity shortly then it could at last become a reality. This is something that has been bandied around for a few years now and hopefully, the time in now for action to make this happen.

As details are announced I'll try and keep us abreast of the happenings. If this does happen then benefits, concerts et al will be needed to provide some financial support. We at Hitsville and There's That Beat! will be looking to support the effort in any way we can. As I'm sure will a number of other "soul clubs/record labels etc" on the Northern Scene.

PHILLY TRIP

Dave Ferguson, his wife Janet, Bev and I have just finished a trip to Philly. We have crammed more soulie stuff into the 3/4 days than I thought was humanly possible. We had a great tour guide with lots of insider knowledge in the shape of Hitsviller - Mr Weldon A McDougal III. Thank You Sir.

Just a few highlights...

Free reign from Chuck Gamble (Kenny Gamble's nephew and current manager of the company), of Sigma Sound II Studios on Broad Street. Fantastic! Lots of pics to come.

A quick pop in to say Hello to Val Shively, who is a stalwart and much valued supporter of There's That Beat! saw us bump into two other UK vinyl reprobates. Pics to follow.

Lunch with Billy Jackson at Houlihans, where we discussed Billy's great catalogue of work and learned of his unreleased recordings, some of which may well stun a few! More later with Billy's permission.

A fantastic trip into Masterworks. (Frankford/Wayne Mastering), including a superb once in a lifetime trip into the vaults!! Dave F actually selected an untitled Gamble tape box and said - "Open it and see if it's The Intruders" - Guess what? Yep - It was the very same group!!

We then sat at the Mastering board and were treated to newly remastered versions of Back Stabbers - OJays by Pete the owner. Pete has a love of both the music and the medium. His knowledge and enthusiasm made us all kindred spirits. MUCH more to follow about this part of the trip.

Next up was a cab ride the next day to E Studios to hook up with Mr Bobby Eli. Bobby's new studio is a complete joy. He treated us to snippets of new stuff he's working on with Russell Tompkins Jr and we were especially thrilled to hear new versions of Gypsy Woman and Heart Trouble by Mr George Clinton. Not fully mastered yet but the version of Heart Trouble was fantastic. Bobby and Vonnie made us extremely welcome and the morning just flew by.

The afternoon resulted in one the most pleasurable afternoons I've ever experienced. Lunch with musical legend Mr Jimmy Wisner, his wife Jane, Billy Jackson and Weldon was simply memorable. Jimmy and Billy have written, arranged and produced many classic Philly sides together and hadn't seen each other for quite a while. It was great to put them together again and then just become a "fly on the wall" as they told story after story about their time on the Philly Soul Scene. This "lunch" lasted 5 hours and at 730pm records were autographed and farewells said. A fantastic day brought to an end with a few scoops in the hotel bar.

Next day 200 yards from the hotel was a Doowop Extravaganza in aid of Military Veterans. Head lining the show were The Tymes. They had the crowd in the palm of their hands from the off as they came out to a medley of TSOP songs. Great show for a great cause. Met up with Russell Tomkins and almost got me facts right about Curtis Blandon and The Dubs! Pics to follow.

Bev and I had to leave at 11am this morning (Sunday) but Dave and Janet have one more day and as we climbed into the taxi they were off to meet up with Linda Jones' daughter. Dave's since been in touch and says it was a great meeting and has lots of stuff to pass on.

So...off to bed now. Knackered but a very happy teddy bear. Living proof that this particular soulie doesn't need 500 bodies, a maplewood sprung dancefloor, a sound system that makes yer ears bleed and the cold damp weather of a little island off Western Europe to enjoy this thing of ours.

Picked up a CD at the Toronto show yesterday, Ric Ric Relics part 1. It is basically numbers 1-28 of the Ric Tic label. Maybe Part 2 will be the rest?

I dont for 1 minute think it is legal as it says Made In Thailand on the back?? but good value at $15Can.

Guy also had Best of Sue and The Ultimate Wigan both of which were pretty good.

There was also copies of Mary Saxton on Pace and the Charmaines on Red Leaf offered me but there is no way I could have explained that on the next bank balance.

Hi All, Just thought of an interesting topic. No doubt it's been done before on some other chat group, but thought i'd give it a try.

So here we go...

What's the best (or biggest) record find you've had in recent years that was $20.00 or under?

Record, Price, Location (State or City is fine), and when you found it.

I've had a few nice finds since being in the States, but i think this was the best one so far:

Timmie Williams on Mala, $15.00, Los Angeles, Last year.

Here's the rules. No "I found a Del Larks at Wigan in 1976 for 150 quid", etc. Recent years finds only. Let's say over the past 5 years (give or take).
