Mary Wells - Fancy Free - Atco W/DEMO (Fantastic Golden World Recording that's up there with anything she ever did)

I recently sold a few 45s to finance a trio of long time wants. I ended up securing two of them (the third one proved too expensive in my opinion so that will have to wait for another day.... Here's what I've picked up on my travels to UK last month....

Proved a tough demo to locate, great beat ballad/shuffler. Randazzo/Pike /Little Anthony at their peak. Full blown big city sounding, lush arrangment, massive emotional performance. Love it!

Hi all, Ive just acquired a copy of Emanuel Lasky-Dont lead me on baby on a plum coloured moulded label. The ZTSC no are scratched in the runout(the opposite way round to on the labels

and both sides have the bell sound stamp and what looks like a 3. Have looked in John Manships price guide and all the copies in there say nashville matrix.

Can anyone of you clever people throw any light on my copy ?

Does anyone know if there's a White Demo of either of these issues Moat Black Chess stockers have a W/Demo but is it double sided or does it have Look Back And Smile on the flip? Anyone got a blue demo to check it's also two sided? Finally, Has anyone a UK Chess copy on Demo? Is it two sided?

I´m very curious how this album sounds, sadly it isn´t available on CD. The release date was 1963 on Argo I think.

I would like to know if this albums contains more songs in the style of "Baltimore Oriole" (it is suuch a breathless record) maybe someone can give me informations I would be thankful for every hint.

Here's a great example of how a guy has used the guides and been completely misled. The lower nd stuff in ALL the guides is a complete misnomer. Eve n in John Manships he rates the lowest records at 10/15 UKP. That's 20 - 30 bucks!

Man wish I could sell stuff at 30 bucks a throw. I'd retire!

Just wanted to let folks know that the Record label dicographies with scans and sound is growing at a good pace. It may seem from the front page of the forum that nothing is added, but it is. It just doesn't show the latest edit by date.

Roger's doing a fantastic job of laying the labels out, (We ll done Matey), and it would be great if anyone who can fill in any gaps could email me or Roger a good quality scan (label only preferred , not the vinyl), and we'll add it into the layout. It's obviously a long term project, but it's developing nicely. If anyone has a preferred label that they have a few records on and would like to see it included just email Roger or Myself.

Bored at work so I thought I would let you know about my trip to the Hamilton Record Show yesterday. This show has been getting worse and worse but as it is literally 15 mins from my house I am obliged to go.

Didnt expect much and after one swoop of the room found only 2 boxes of new 45's, had a flick through and found The Linneas - Diamond, Billy Bland - St Lawrence and Sue Darby - ABC ( I didnt know this but it was a cover of the Cant Get Enough Of You Baby ), Sandy Borden - Diplomacy and took a chance on The New Breed on Diplomacy. Not bad for $1C each. Also took a chance on a Billy Joe Burnett 45 on Gold Standard as it was co-written by Clifford Binns, probably should have been put off by the Nashville address on the label and a 45 on Dore by Deane Hawley but that turned out to be pants as well - oh well.

Desperate, I even started looking through albums and found some nice stuff for $2C each. Maytones - GG, The Blues Brothers - Dynamic, Shaft - Soul Mann and the Brothers, The Brothers - Were You Ready For This - RCA, Faith, Hope and Charity - RCA

Looking forward to St Catherines show next week and also a great Flea Market in the town that has turned up alot of stuff for me in the past. Dealer from Fort Erie is also bringing me a 1000 or so 45's to look at!! - Heres hoping.

Have been buying quite a few of the Kent singles recently. Most recent was the Little Ann - What Should I Do, came through the letterbox yesterday from John Manship. Also managed to find a 6T's anniversary disc, Carla Thomas - I'll Never Stop Loving You, both fabulous previously unreleased tracks. Question is, would the Hitsville Guys DJ records like these ?

Just thought this might get a few thinking...

There are deratin slices of music that stay with you forever. For me it's things like:

The intro to Uptight - Stevie Wonder. Benjamin and Jamerson in complete unison. Even Hank Cosby who wrote the damn tune must have been surprised when he heard the Bom, Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom, Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom. They hit the opening note BANG ON and never waver throughout the whole song.

and:

Chairman Of The Board - Give Me Just a Little More Time when the General gives it large with a "Brrrrppp!! Oh Baby". Fantastic stuff. I wonder what he wrote on the chart? Brrrrpppp??

and

Linda Jones - I'm So Glad I found You. After the moments have done a sterling job on the song, linda comes in about a minute in. You've enjoyed the record up to now, but then POW!! She ta kes the whole thing to another level.

and finally:

The quirky shift of temo in The Chandlers - Your Love Makes Me Lonely? The onefter the silent brea k midway/ The guitar riff is well off tempo then the drum fill comes in and rescues you!!

So, I heard Mayfield Players on CD, then I saw it on ebay. What I thought this is unreleased stuff how can it be on ebay.

So anyway I bought it!

If something that was unreleased is now released and says so on the label and is on a Mayfield replica label is it "original"?

The Foreign Dominance of Picture Sleeves

Is there an explanation of why the picture sleeve versions of some rare soul records seem to come predominantly from places not usually associated with the English language. I recently saw a picture sleeve and record for sale of Big Joe Turner "Two Loves Have I", French Picture sleeve and Joe Turner without the "Big". I know Motown did lots of picture sleeves though I don't remember there being that many PS in the UK until the seventies and eighties and then mostly punk and pop (probably better that they were covered up the whole way). I do remember the Casino Classics, Inferno (Phil Coulter) Grapevine (Hey Little Way Out Girl - Del Capris, with the Jumping at the GoGo cartoons) stuff coming out with PS but that doesn't count in this thread really (or does it)

Looking forward to some edumacation here.
