First Hitsville gathering in Mojacar and expected a few hiccups/teething problems but was very pleasantly surprised. Admin wise nothing major, but as you'd expect there's a few 'bits' that need addressing before the club return next year.

NUMBERS: We had 121 attend, including DJs and young Carrick. (He spent as much time on the dancefloor as anyone so ranks a full tick in a box for attending.

PROGRAMME: Thought the programme was just about right. Thursday at Reflections, nice and chilled, people arriving, few scoops, few hellos, putting names to faces etc. Bit of a dance etc. enjoyed it. Then Friday - still a few arriving but by now we're 'at it' full belt. Saturday Allnighter, by Midnight it's
buzzin' and we still had 30 people on the dancefloor at the end before breakfast so...another good night, the Sunday BBQ/Brunch Alldayer at La Finca. A superb way to spend the day chilling out to the guys midtempo sounds. Have to say I REALLY enjoyed the afternoon/early evening as the guys dug into their boxes for stuff you never hear. Then Monday evening 20 of us out for a meal to celebrate Marcelle's birthday just about capped it all off in fine style I thought. Nice one guys!

HOTEL VENUE: Have to say I've received nothing but good things about the hotel location. Not surprising really as it's right on the beach and most rooms open their balcony to a Mediterranean sea view. General feeling was that it was much better than La Quinta in Kissimmee. Few things need sorting reference posting bar tariff and menu for daytime snacks but apart from that I think it's a case of 'Ain't broke - don't fix it'.

ALLNIGHTER ROOM : Will get some industrial fans for next year as it did hot up! Also, will change light bulbs next year for better ambient lighting. Apart from that I think we were 'tickety boo'. The inside/outside terrace didn't cause any dramas and people could flow in and out as they wished. Might even take the afternoon sessions outside next year onto the beach! Watch this space.

SOUND RIG : It's no secret that I'm on a learning curve with this and the bits we added to the rig this year proved to be a massive improvement. The clubs equipment is improved upon each year and although we had two pieces fail on us, the replacement was seamless and I doubt anyone noticed. We pumped out 400w from each speaker x 4 and it sounded good to my ears. I asked around and everyone seemed to think the sound was spot on. We have one mic and one Technic to repair and then we will be complete with two sets again for next year. We have enough in the kitty to carry out these repairs so all is well on that front. We need a spare amp in order to be fully prepared for any mishaps and Kev P has said he will take care of that, so cheers Kilo.

DJs : Stars of the show for me. It's also no secret that I like nothing better than hanging out with guys who have a similar love of soul on vinyl and this year was outstanding. Right from the off the Hitsville 'firstimers' slotted straight in with the gang and fit like a glove. Albert and Dani, Budgie, Karl, Pete, Denny and Chris and their respective ladies proved that there are likeminded people out there who love their soul and are determined to celebrate it with style and panache. Great job guys. Your contribution was immense and we all appreciated it. I will add a few playlists at the bottom of this post. Not all the 45s palyed but it'll give you a flavour of what got played. Bit churlish to pick anyone out from what was an outstanding line up of record collectors but a few highlights for me:

Pete's satisfaction on opening his Allnighter set with Larry Clinton. It's a great feeling for a collector to wait so long and then do it.
Denny's grabbing the bull by the horns with Gewn Owens just at the right time.
Karl dropping the needle onto the unreleased Contours.
Fergie slating me fopr not having Sonny Herman, then playing it.
Greety playing Chuck Holiday and Sounds of Friction (It's the only time I ever get to dance to 'em)
Al Pollard playing Linda Jones - If We Had Met Sooner (A triumph of quality over rarity if ever there was one)
Dani playing The Teenagers 45 while a couple of members of the band danced to it.
Finally managing to say..."This is The Poets - Wrapped Around Your Finger"
Watching Denny's Eddie Parker (Awake) spinning on a Hitsville slipmat for the first time.

All great memories, stored away for those bleak Saturday nights ahead.

RADIO SHOWS: First time I've been responsible for these and I'm still wading through the WAV files etc. Keep an eye (and an ear) on the website over the next few months as Jason and I try to get 'em up there.

THE FUTURE: The general concensus was that we will return next year for sure. Hotel bookings and transport from the airport will be done next year by Bev so as to avoid the language barrier that put a few people off and we also discussed bringing an iconic musician/arranger/producer to the next one with a view to an afternoon Q and A session and radio interview. (Similar to the one we did with The Harthon Trio).

FINALLY: There was one blight towards the end of the Sunday Night when unfortunately a couple of bootlegs were spotted on the decks. The 'DJ' was asked to stand down and I finished the set. It's important that people understand that if they are invited to come play with us on the Hitsville Technics that there is no ambiguity. We are a bunch of dancin' anoraks that ONLY play 45s/LPs/Acetates etc in their original format. Any type of bootleg, pressing, carver, or whatever other gubbins is neither required, wanted or appreciated. If you don't agree with us that's fine, but it's our club and our etiquette, if you don't agree with it......leave your 45s at home. Needless to say the commemorative slipmats that the offending items infected have been destroyed and replaced with new ones.

Big thanks to everyone for their feedback. Bev and I had a great time all weekend. Great music, great banter, great dancing, some lovely meals and to share it all with such luvverly people makes it al the more special. See you in Valencia in a couple of weeks when we get to do it all again!!!!!!

Playlists:

PETE FOWLER:

Saturday

Larry Clinton - She's Wanted - Dynamo demo
Versatones - With A Broken Heart - Magic City
Brooks Brothers - Lookin For A Woman - Tay
Johnny James - Tell You About My Girl - Circle M
Bobby James - I Really Love You - Karol
Joe Hicks - I Gotta Be Free - AGC
Executive Four - I Got A Good Thing Going - Lu Mar
Jimmy & Lots of 'firsts' including the first Eddie Parker on the Hitsville turntables. Lots of great stuff played. Oldies, Newies, Rarities, Cheapies, Beat Ballads, Uptempo, MidTempo....Event started on Thursday Night with:

Skip Jackson - Haven't We Met Before - 20th Century Fox Demo

And finished at Midnight on Sunday with:

The Enchanters - I Paid For the Party - Loma Demo

The stuff in between was stoopendous. The soundrig performed to perfection. The hotel and staff were superb, the weather was beautiful and the Mediterranean equally so.

We had 120 attendees.

More to follow like pics and playlists as people get home and recover. The US gang were missed and we all hope you can make the next one.

A full blown weekend of great soul music of all descriptions. All played, danced to and appreciated by a group of people who do it with style and panache like nowhere else. Well chuffed.

Most people en route home now, so hopefully once they're sorted we'll hear from them.

Off to Bed........KNACKERED BUT HAPPY!

HITSVILLE WEEKENDER

Hi Gang,
Just to update you. Not gonna comment about the accommodation of any of the administration. Prestatyn in Feb...it is what it is. From our point of view it was great to meet up with Sammy Campbell again and get him to autograph the pic we had taken in NJ. His voice was not at it's best as he'd had flu since arriving. Both he and his son were real gents. Lots of time for the fans and really enjoyed meeting the UK soulies, as does everyone who makes the trip.

Performances on the night were as we've come to expect. The band were magnificent! The drummer deserves a special mention for reproducing the drum fills on the Precisions song with uncanny accuracy. Gloria Jones seems to have lost her voice now but it was nice to see the crowd give her rousing applause which is just as it should be. Some great memories of Ms Jones dancefloor fillers.

Gwen Owen's daughter nearly stole the show from Mom! A great rendition of "Just Say You're Wanted and Needed". Jerry Williams - the consummate professional. Another artist who really gets involved in the event and tries to speak to as many fans as possible. I always enjoy listening to them on the radio and this year John Smith did a great interview with 'Swamp'. A great bloke.

All in all a great show. Would have to say that The Precisions JUST shaded it for top spot for me personally. The guys really nailed it. Richie Pitts (honorary Precision) was in his element! He's 70 years old nearly and would put many artists half his age to shame with his enthusiasm and complete dedication to his craft. Outstanding.

All the rooms appeared to provide what people wanted. If you can't find some type of soul that 'floats your boat' at Prestatyn then I'd suggest you never will. It does exactly what it says on the tin.

So...onto the records that came home with me. Picked up this nice little item...

DISCO DISCO DISCO !

DISCO DISCO DISCO !

STRUT at Corks ..... Had a great time, saw lots of people, heard lots of music. Spent Friday at the Burnley Allnighter where Russ Vickers turned up. Nice to see him looking well after his recent scare. Some great records played including The Terrifics, The Poets, Sonny Herman and a great version of Ain't No Sun Since You Been Gone by The Originals.

Spent a few hours sleeping on Dave Fergie's front door mat...(Don't ask?!)

Then down to meet Billy Jackson and escort him to Guy Hennigan's 50th birthday bash. Another great night. Saw a few folks I ain't seen in a while, including Ion, Rob Marriot and a few other collectors. Billy had a great time as people came up and recognised him. I think he was surprised that so many people knew of so much of his work. Was good to meet a few magazine subscribers too and put names to faces.

There are plans afoot for a great event in UK next year. If things slot into place Hitsville/There's That Beat! will be at the forefront so watch this space for details.

Chi Town comes to Florida

Saturday 27th Oct 2007
Carol Morsani Hall
Tampa Bay Performing Arts Centre

LIVE ON STAGE:

Jerry Butler - The Icemen Himself!!
Gene Chandler - THE Duke of Earl
The Impressions - Fred Cash and Sam Gooden!

Plus Philly's very own son - Mr Billy Paul.

Now this is FLORIDA!! Just written one for s. source Dave (Alzheimer) Moore told me to get my play list list up immediately!.So here you go, I Had the after the pie & Pea session, I remember that clearly, because I thought Greety had got caught short and had a poop behind the decks on closer inspection it was a pile of mushy peas that just looked like a pile of poop. Thanks Greety! Obviously not a norvener. Doesn't like mushy peas.
2.30a.m. till 3.30 a.m.
1.The Rockmasters It’s Raining Teardrops Romulus*
2.The Shadows My Love Is Gone USA
3.Sy Hightower I Know Carmen
4.Sherlock Holmes	Standing At A Standstill Part III*
5.Cal Greene I’ll Give You Just A Little More Time	Filmtown* 6.Eddie Daye & 4 Bars	Guess Who Love You Shrine*
7.Deena Johnson Breaking Point Wild Deauce*
8.Silhouettes Not Me Baby Goodway
10. The last 2 were from LP’s. Great response on the dance floor really surprised that so many danced to Cal Greene and Chuck Jackson . All the records with * were requested (quite a few) Dancer of the set must go out to Tommy Potts who usually doesn’t dance –shock horror he danced to nearly everything, thanks Tommy. Highlight of the set for me was Sir Ceaser and Curtis Davies Although it was nice to get a positive response from the dance floor -full stop. Of course one of my favourite records of all time is Eddie Daye I also consider myself very fortunate to own one. Thanks to everybody for the positive response. The most fun I have had in a long time. It was great seeing everybody again and great to meet new people. The music as always was the best of the best and the rarest of the rare.

Being in the presence of the gentlemen from Harthon was both an honor and humbling for me and I know that others will paint a much better picture of the experience than I ever could.

So what makes this event so special? I think it is the fact that the group is only here for a positive experience, camaraderie and friendship. I come here excited to hear what anybody plays, old, new, rare, not so rare, classics, left field, major plug sides and little known flip sides, a sense of music adventurism with the feeling that the feedback you get will be honest and without behind your back criticism.

I get to throw myself around a dance floor in a haze of talcum powder in shorts and a tee shirt. She was one step ahead of Dave and myself most of the time (well really all of the time) never settling for second best. We had a couple of dramas that only one or two people knew about thanks to Bev. I got to work closely with Dave Moore this time around and what a consummate professional, it was a pleasure.

All of the people who came from the UK (and if I miss anyone I am sorry) Fergie and Janet, Bev and Kev, Alan Pollard and his family (what a treat to see Alan here with us and spinning a double set), Dave Greet and his lovely wife, Howard and Kath, Phil and his mate (can’t remember his name, sorry) who came over “blind” from the North East of England.

The California contingent DJ Bywell as always fun and feel good to be around, Tommy Potts (still giggling I think from listening to the old ‘uns singing stupid songs from the 70’s (definitely not norvern) while we played “It’s a Knockout” in the pool) and Mike Umholtz who always throws himself into the culture with enthusiasm and little bewilderment

The <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Chicago boys, who also have incredible enthusiasm and excitement for the music and the event, brought some friends from Milwaukee who were equally impressed from all accounts.

The Florida folks, of course Dave and Bev Moore, Jeff Lemlich and Co. a couple of newies, Garry from Orlando and Mark from Tavares and of course me and the little un and the wife waiting patiently.

The DJ Villa was another success, records spinning on the Numark run through the tele for additional volume! Go to the toilet before you leave the house.

2. If you have to go to the bathroom at the airport DO NOT think about Northern Soul. I would hate for you to start tapping your toes as your favorite choon goes around and round in your head. As we know toilet dancing and restless leg syndrome can get you in a whole lot of trouble.

3. If something does happen don't tell the scuffies that you are going to Florida to dance with yer mates, they might not understand and neither would a judge.

Travel safe.

Mark

Histville Weekender Update

Hey Hey!
Alan and Judi Pollard along with their daughter Jo will be joining us at the weekender. The pull of the Harthon guys was too much for Al. I've talked him into DJing for us on Saturday night too! Bonus!

We're gonna have the whole Hitsville Gang together. It's gonna be a great weekend. Have started digging through boxes for 45s to play already!

Can't wait!
