Hi There,
Welcome to Hitsville.
Duffy - A retro pastiche that I personally wouldn't buy but at least it's 'real' music which is a step in the right direction.
Soul? - Maybe not. But anyone with a vested interest in it will ry and convince us it is!.
Regards,
Dave http://www.theresthatbeat.com/http://www.hitsvillesoulclub.com/

I went on YouTube and checked out the Duffy video. Northern soul dancers! This year's newest accessory! Just round up a few, scatter them around in the background and watch 'em spin! Instant soul star!
I thought the best thing going was her voice on its own. She sort of reminds me of Lulu with a dash of Betty LaVette. I would have much preferred an earthier sound backing her up. Amy Winehouse just phones it in and sounds like a late 50s drugged up Billie Holiday where this girl sounds a little more powerful. Bear in mind, I'm talking 2008 standards, here.
The whole way through I just couldn't get with the music at all. It was just too lightweight and it didn't fit her vocal. Kind of a weak track. Crappy 60s retro sound. didn't do the vocals justice.
Maybe with the right producers/musicians, she could win a few soul fans. Amy Winehouse's band will probably be out of a job soon anyway. When they're not backing Sharon Jones maybe they could do this girl a favor.
Certainly needs no favors in the looks department, though.
Ok-back to soul music now.
