Awesome clip! it's great to see one that's in color. I love those dancers on the old shows like Shindig and Hullabaloo. Nowadays there would be lots more skin showing.
Can you even imagine?!

Hello chaps,
This clip is actually from the Universal Movie "Out of Sight" and the track by Dobie Gray was also featured on the movie soundtrack album that came out on Decca records. The track was retitled (OUT OF SIGHT) OUT ON THE FLOOR on the album to coincide with the movie title. Other artists performing in the film and on the soundtrack are Gary Lewis and the Playboys, The Knickerbockers, Freddie and The Dreamers, The Turtles, The Astronauts and Nick Venet. The film itself is an appalling teen flick in the best Hollywood tradition combining Secret agents, Drag racing, Martial arts and Beat groups. The only redeeming feature of the film is the inclusion (completely out of context) of the magnificent Dobie Gray number. Interestingly enough (and especially for northern soul fans) the version of OUT ON THE FLOOR on the sound track album is different to the Charger release having an extra chorus and being 3:10 long. Also instead of the normal fade out at the end it finishes with a rousing shout from Dobie of "IT`S OUT OF SIGHT". If I can get my scanner working I will send you a copy of the album sleeve, I could also send a sound file if any one is interested in hearing this alternative monster.
Best regards
Chris Frost

| Here are some more images
You can see the title used for the DOBIE GRAY track appears as (OUT OF SIGHT) OUT ON THE FLOOR and when I first saw this album many years ago I was intrigued by track 5 on side one as the writing credits and title implied that it might be an instrumental version of OUT ON THE FLOOR. Alas it was not to be and the track is an uptempo guitar led "go-go" type beater more surf garage than Northern Soul.
Here is the still from the movie of Dobie Gray performing his number, apparently he is doing "THE FRUG"!!!!!

| Here is the record label
I have just played the album version of OUT ON THE FLOOR alongside the 45 version and it is clear to me that the album version is the original full length recording and the 45 version has been edited down to get under 3 minutes. On the 45 after the first verse and chorus (49 seconds) which ends with "HEY HEY HEY" it goes straight into the second verse with "OUT ON THE FLOOR TONIGHT I FEEL LIKE SINGING" On the album there is an extra "HEY HEY HEY" then a "YEAH YEAH YEAH , IT`S OUT OF SIGHT" followed by an instrumental passage. When listening to the 45 Version there is an almost audible click where this section has been edited out. If you had never heard the full version you would not notice this, but once you have heard it, the 45 almost sounds like it skips when it gets to this bit. I will try and send it to you so you can tell what I`m talking about. regard Chris
