We at Hitsville believe that there are certain artists who just seem to be synonymous with northern and rare soul music. We also try to pay tribute to many of those artists who deserve a bit more recognition. Plus, there are some soul singers and groups who are well-known throughout the world, but have scores of great overlooked singles and LP tracks. When we look at an artist, we do our best to focus on the musical output, first and foremost. It's the musical legacy that lives on.

Stanley Mitchell: Detroit Hero of Rhythm & Blues and Soul
Many fans of northern soul will know this name just from one song: "Get it Baby", but there was a long legacy that spanned decades in the music business. Stanley Mitchell had been making music in the 1950s with his group, The Tornadoes amongst others. He was still making music in Detroit even into the last days of his life. In this article, we celebrate the life of this musical journeyman who passed away in late 2006.
  
Patrice Holloway: Another Soulful Star in the Sky
All of us at Hitsville mourn the tragic loss of Ms. Patrice Holloway. Her style of singing was sultry, very understated and truly soulful. No fan of rare soul fan would disagree. It's very unfortunate that a proper collection of her music has never been put together in her lifetime. We decided to dedicate a page to pay tribute to this lovely woman by telling a little about her and showcase her talents by putting up a collection of her music to listen to and enjoy. A night on the town in Las Vegas...with Dean Courtney!
Some of the Hitsville Crew had the rare privelege of spending an unforgettable evening with soul legend Dean Courtney and his lady, Gaynell. We had a wonderful time having dinner, taking in some entertainment, talking about music, and just getting to know this great musical personality, in general. We even had a little sing-along to a couple of Dean's classic tunes before the night was over! It was truly a night to remember for all of us. Steve Mancha: A Northern Soul Icon
This is the first part of the Steve Mancha story, which investigates the early work of Steve Mancha and his Detroit apprenticeship. We look at his work on Groovesville and with The Holidays and the guidance and inspiration of Don Davis, not to mention an armory of singing talent that was the "Cream of the Crop" of Detroit's voice. Steve Mancha is one of the best, whether behind the recording console or behind the microphone.

Although the group has had various personnel changes, one thing has always remained constant...the quality. Join us as we explore the sound of one the greatest male harmony groups of all time.
Barbara Lewis: No Stranger to Soul
The career of Barbara Lewis is indellibly linked to her relationship with Ollie McLaughlin and his recording entourage. Although Barbara was a more than accomplished songwriter in her own right, the production skills of Ollie McLaughlin moulded Barbara's early style. From the early recordings with McLaughlin to the later Stax output, there exists a varied and sophisticated body of work to listen to in this article. Barbara is still active in the music scene and although she now lives in Florida, still tours the circuit on odd occasions.
